A home office is essentially a room that combines everything that is needed at the office into one single room. More and more individuals are now working at home, which has led the home office supplies industry to become prosperous. There are certain things that a home office shouldn’t go without, as far as efficiency and productivity are concerned.

Comfort

While a home office should be comfortable, it should first be dependable and durable. A sturdy computer desk is usually the first and foremost purchase, aside from the computer itself. The desk is where almost all the work will be conducted, so it should be spacious and well designed. A desk is nothing without a comfortable chair, which is what is usually shopped for second. An uncomfortable or cheap chair will lead to back problems, discomfort, and inefficiency. On the contrary, a comfortable chair is almost vital to conducting fast and productive business.

Communication

Communication is important to running a successful home business. Having a second phone line leaves a sense of professionalism that customers come to expect from a business. Otherwise, confusion may result as it isn’t always sure what the caller’s intent is- whether personal or business. Getting a second phone line instantly solves this problem, and is rather inexpensive.
Organization ties into business, as it is needed to run smoothly. Investing in a file cabinet or filing software for computers is worth the money for the time saved in trying to find specific documents or files. Lastly, lighting is a key factor in the home office business. Poor lighting often results from ceiling lights- so a desk light is usually needed. Desk lamps are useful for reviewing documents quickly without having to strain the eyes.

Office Supplies

There is a hierarchy of importance when buying home office supplies, but generally, they are all needed. A home office with great equipment and supplies is nothing without organizational investments. This remains true for all aspects of a business- communication, productivity supplies, and separation of personal and business life. Without them all, a home office isn’t as efficient as the competition, and it can mean all the difference between success and lack thereof.

    Great post! A couple things I would add are a headset so you can talk comfortably on the phone with a client. The other is a phone log, which just means a notebook that stays by the phone and one to take with you on the go. If you talk on the phone and take notes, use the phone log and phone numbers are less likely to get lost.
    Hope that helps!

    @Brandie, Thanks for the tips.

    I find that having a planner nearby to write things down in is very helpful. I constantly am looking at it to check what I have to do. I also have to have a to-do list. Those two things help me to manage my time well.

    @Stephen – I couldn’t agree more about having a planner handy. Thanks for your comment.
