How do you say that a freelance writer is a successful one? Is it based on the money that the writer earns in one month? While this is usually what most people think about in categorizing the success of a freelance writer, this is not the sole basis in determining one’s success. Here are some characteristics that determine if one is successful or not.

No urgency for jobs

If a freelance writer does not have to email various clients asking for job opportunities or projects since he or she has a steady work flow, then consider the writer successful. With the intense competition for freelance jobs these days, a freelance writer has to be patient and resourceful in order to get a consistent amount of projects on a regular basis. Successful freelance writers, on the other hand, have constant volume of projects to work on. They have built a reputation among clients that they don’t really need to knock at the doors of these clients in search for projects.

Making good money

Successful freelance writers are not exactly affluent but they make enough money, meaning they have enough cash for their daily living expenses, and they are able to save, too. Some successful freelance writers in fact make more money compared to those who report regularly to the office, or those with 9-5 jobs. Not a bad idea considering that freelance writers do not have to spend time and money commuting to and from work.

Working for bigger firms

Successful freelance writers do not need to hold high paying positions in multinational companies. The fact that they lend their expertise and skills in communications to these large companies indicates that they’ve made it big in their field. Usually these large firms tap these freelance writers since they believe in the writers’ capabilities to prepare high quality write ups at the shortest possible time. If you are one of those writers on the payroll of large firms, then consider yourself successful.

Of course, success is relative. One can earn a thousand dollars a year but still won’t consider himself or herself a successful freelance writer. On the other hand one could feel successful even though he or she experiences shortage of projects from time to time. One can just use the meaning of success and turn it as a measuring stick to help him or her achieve more levels of success.
