The Intricate Details of Freelance Work
June 11th, 2008 | Posted in Careers, Freelancing.Various companies and employers call for freelance writers, and if you feel that writing is one of your strengths, you should try it as a business. Many writers find it difficult to sell their writing services because writing has become very personal for them. For them, writing is an art, and it feels wrong to sell it for a fee, even if it is a considerable amount of money.
In the freelance writing business, your skills as a salesman are equally important as your skills in writing. You should also be able to handle your time and schedule well, and deal with how your client will react to what you have written. You should also be able to meet deadlines well.
Freelance writing should be viewed as a business, with the specialty being the ability to form words artfully, according to the specifications of the client. A freelance writer has to master a lot of skills, since this is a personal and individual undertaking. A freelancer should be able to find clients or employers for him or herself and convincing them that he or she is right for the job, write for the client, and edit his or her own work. In other words, the skills of a freelance writer are not to be underestimated.
A portfolio is an excellent marketing tool for the freelance writer. A good portfolio should be presentable, and it should contain excerpts from the best articles or pieces that the writer has produced so far, as well as testimonials from clients and a price list. Freelancers can also provide discounts for bulk orders from a single client.
In terms of payment, some freelance writers require an bank account where the initial fee will be deposited. The rest of the fee will be released as soon as the project is complete. Freelance writers may also opt for an invoice basis, in which payment will be made as soon as a portion or the whole project has been completed. Others may ask for full payment upon agreement.
Freelance writers may also experience having clients that seem impossible to satisfy. The comfort that writers can get from this nightmarish experience is that they need not work for these clients ever again.
As a person begins freelance writing work, there may be times when the writer as an artist intercedes, and one may feel uncomfortable seeing their hobby or passion as a business. However, this discomfort must be dealt with in order to reap the benefits of freelancing.
